26-Hole vs 40-Hole

Pickleball balls are designed for indoor and outdoor play, with outdoor balls typically having 40 smaller holes and indoor balls having 26 larger holes. This difference in hole size and number affects the ball's flight and responsiveness to wind and court surface.

Indoor Pickleballs (26 holes):

Purpose: Tailored for less abrasive and more controlled environment of an indoor court

Hole Size: Larger holes

Plastic: Lighter and softer plastic for more accurate shots and bounce on indoor surfaces

Flight: The ball moves slower and is easier to control, leading to longer rallies and a more strategic game

Outdoor Pickleballs (40 holes):

Purpose: Designed to minimize wind impact on ball's flight path, ensuring more predictable trajectories

Hole Size: Smaller holes

Plastic: Thicker and harder plastic for increased durability

Flight: The ball comes off the paddle faster and harder

Injection Ball vs Rotational Ball

Pickleballs are made in 2 processes, each influencing ball’s characteristics and suitability:

Injection Molding (2-piece Construction):

This technique involves creating two half-shells of pickleball by injecting molten plastic into molds that already have the hole patterns. Once cooled, these halves are bonded together, resulting in a ball with a visible seam around its circumference. Injection-molded balls are typically lighter and offer a higher bounce, making them ideal for indoor play on smooth surfaces. However, the seam can be a potential weak point, affecting durability.

Rotational Molding (1-Piece Construction):

In this process, a mold is filled with liquid plastic and rotated slowly, ensuring an even distribution of material as it solidifies into a seamless, hollow sphere. After cooling, holes are drilled into the ball. Rotationally molded balls are seamless, which enhances their durability and provides a consistent bounce. They are slightly heavier and less bouncy than injection-molded balls, making them well-suited for outdoor play where wind resistance and durability are important factors.

Understanding these manufacturing methods helps players choose the appropriate pickleball based on their playing environment and preferences.

Materials:

Common plastics used for pickleball manufacturing includes PE (Polyethylene), PP (Polypropylene), ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), and TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer), but they differ in their properties and applications. PE is known for its flexibility and chemical resistance, PP for its toughness and heat resistance, ABS for its strength and impact resistance, and TPE for its rubber-like flexibility and processability.
